Burley is one of those areas that, a bit like West Park, rather amorphously drifts into its surrounding suburbs with no clear boundaries. Comprising of four sub-suburbs it actually consists of Burley Village, Burley Lodge, Burley Wood and Burley Hill. Adjoining Little Woodhouse on its Eastern edge, Kirkstall on its Northern and Western edges, Hyde Park on its southern edge and Headingley on its South Western edge its easy to get from Burley to any of those adjoining areas and, via Burley Road into the City Centre. As Burley Road also passes within 100 metres of the bottom of the LGI / Clarendon Wing complex its also a useful route into the city for those working or studying there.
The majority of the housing is traditional terraced housing, much of it running up Burley Hill and Burley Wood between Kirkstall Road and Burley Road, with further side streets running between Burley Road through Burley Village towards Burley Park Railway station (that strictly speaking is in Hyde Park). Additionally there are quite significant developments of 1930s semi detached houses in small estates in Burley Wood and the Edens together with ribbon development along Burley Road. The oldest parts of the suburb have 18 th century mansions but all of these have now been converted into smaller units. The housing stock is therefore quite varied but with very few of the larger houses (7 or more bedrooms) that are to be found in adjacent Hyde Park. Many of the three bedroomed 30s semis feature a separate dining room and are oftern marketed a four bedroomed properties, using the Dining room as a bedroom but almost invariably the original third bedroom is a box room over the hallway.
There are a range of shops in small ribbon developments on Burley Road at Burley Village, Burley Hill and Kirkstall Hill and Kirkstall Valley Retail Centre is within easy reach.
