Less in demand from students than its near neighbour, Headingley, Meanwood still offers excellent all round facilities within the centre of the "old" village and on its immediate outskirts with 2 supermarkets, BurgerKing, a traditional range of shops and local public houses. The Myrtle Tavern overlooks the local cricket pitch and adjoins the Meanwood Valley trail. The nearby The Bay Horse Inn serves a decent Sunday lunch set in traditional surroundings and both are set on a narrow but busy back-water road. The Meanwood Valley Farm is open all year round and provides environmental, educational, training and leisure facilities.
Connected by bus routes along Meanwood Road into the city Centre and out to the Moor Allerton shopping centre for a Sainsburys supermarket and Homebase Meanwood is a good choice for those who want to be slightly away from the vibrant and noisy student areas but still within easy reach of their facilities.
Built partially on the valley slopes up to Battys Wood some of Meanwoods streets are the steepest in Leeds and cannot be accessed by car. The majority of housing is terraced, but there are a number of semi detached streets dating from the 1930s and a quite significant proportion of relatively new developments built in the last few years. Whilst the range of properties is not as great as in some other suburbs they do present good value.
